Persistent auditory hallucinations that are unresponsive to antipsychotic drugs.

چکیده
According to DSM-IV-TR, a hallucination is “a sensory perception that has a compelling sense of reality of a true perception, but occurs without external stimulation of the relevant sensory organ.” Thus, an auditory hallucination is a false perception of sound. These are the most common forms of hallucinations (1). Auditory hallucinations are found most often in patients with schizophrenia, with a prevalence of 75% in that population (2). However, auditory hallucinations have been described in conjunction with many life circumstances and diseases, including religious phenomena, bereavement, drug intoxication, sensory deprivation, and near-death experiences, as well as psychiatric or neurological disorders. Auditory hallucinations have been estimated to occur in 10%–15% of those without neuropsychiatric illness (3). Auditory hallucinations have been linked to left-brain alterations in imaging studies, more specifically Broca’s area, the anterior cingulate, the superior temporal lobe, and the primary auditory cortex (4). Many historical figures, from Socrates and Caesar to Descartes and Joan of Arc, have been reported to “hear voices” (5). Although the meaning, significance, and etiology of these voices depend on their context, auditory hallucinations are most often a symptom of severe, disabling psychiatric or neurological illness. This article recounts the treatment course of a patient with new-onset auditory hallucinations. To highlight the importance of taking a thorough history, we present the relevant data longitudinally, in the same manner in which it was obtained.

Control of persistent auditory hallucinations through audiotape therapy (three case reports).
Auditory hallucinations are found in patients with schizophrenia. For some patients with persistent psychotic symptoms, hallucinations are unresponsive to medications. We report three cases with schizophrenia and persistent auditory hallucinations. In this study three types of tapes were used: pure music, music and speech, blank tapes. The patients were asked to record the duration and severity...

Declaration of interest None. Auditory hallucinations occur frequently in people with psychiatric disorders, being most common in schizophrenia, and are often described as ‘voices’. Such hallucinations are usually treated with antipsychotic medication, but in 25–30% of patients they are refractory to traditional antipsychotic drugs. Their pathophysiological basis remains unknown, although funct...
متن کاملAuditory hallucinations, not necessarily a hallmark of psychotic disorder.
Auditory hallucinations (AH) are often considered a sign of a psychotic disorder. This is promoted by the DSM-5 category of Other Specified Schizophrenia Spectrum And Other Psychotic Disorder (OSSSOPD), the diagnostic criteria for which are fulfilled with the sole presence of persistent AH, in the absence of any other psychotic symptoms. And yet, persistent AH are not synonymous with having a p...

A recent commentary in Nature reported 10 patientoriented research priorities for schizophrenia derived from a process that elicited the input of patients, clinicians, and other caregivers. A James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership (named after the 18th century Scottish physician who showed that citrus fruits cured scurvy) identified treatment uncertainties for schizophrenia that were ...
متن کاملDifferential Treatment Response of Auditory Hallucination in A Unilateral Hearing Impaired Patient: A Case Report
The prevalence of schizophrenia among hearing impaired is nearly equal to that of the general population [1]. Both bilateral and unilateral auditory hallucinations in hearing impaired are thought to predispose them to develop schizophrenia [2]. Auditory hallucinations in patients with normal hearing may inadequately respond to antipsychotic medication [3]. There is no report that hallucinations...
